No, you cannot rely on that. OpenAI does not document any transfer from the Bing index. It sets its own conditions: OAI-SearchBot must be allowed to crawl the page, and your host or CDN must allow traffic from the bot's published IP ranges. If you have been indexed by Bing for years and never checked these two points, you can be missing from ChatGPT's search answers entirely.
- A place in the Bing index is no ticket into ChatGPT. Each has its own crawler and its own access conditions.
- If you block OAI-SearchBot, you will not appear in ChatGPT's search answers, though you can still show up as a navigational link.
- According to OpenAI, robots.txt changes take around 24 hours to reach its search systems.
- For offline web search, OpenAI gives no fixed refresh time for a single URL. Coverage and freshness vary by page, language and region.
- Bing still matters, with a search market share of around 6.4 percent in Germany in October 2026 and as a source for Microsoft's AI answers.
Where does the assumption come from?
There is some truth to it. When OpenAI launched web search in 2024, it described it as a combination of third-party search providers and content from direct partners. At that stage, it made sense to read Bing visibility as a precursor to ChatGPT visibility. Microsoft still appears next to Shopify among the search providers in OpenAI's help article on web search.
Two developments have overtaken the assumption anyway. Microsoft retired the Bing Search APIs on 11 August 2025, the open route through which other products could obtain Bing results. And OpenAI now documents its own holdings: certain workspaces have a web search that uses OpenAI's indexed and cached web content instead of a live search. What this index means for your website is covered in Labrador: ChatGPT's own index.
What does OpenAI require for inclusion?
OpenAI names two conditions: crawl permission for OAI-SearchBot and open network paths for its IP ranges. According to the bot documentation, OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features. Pages that exclude it are not shown in search answers, but can still appear as navigational links.
Access is the prerequisite, not the placement. OpenAI itself says results are ranked by several factors and that placement is not guaranteed. What else makes a passage citable is covered in How do I get cited in ChatGPT?
How do the Bing index and OpenAI's index differ?
Different crawlers fill them, and they take effect in different places:
| Question | Bing index | OpenAI's index and cache |
|---|---|---|
| Which bot fills it? | Bingbot | OAI-SearchBot |
| Where does it take effect? | Bing search results, Microsoft Copilot and AI summaries in Bing | Search answers in ChatGPT, including offline web search in certain workspaces |
| What does a block cost? | Visibility in Bing and in Microsoft's AI answers | No display in ChatGPT's search answers, navigational links remain possible |
| Second hurdle next to robots.txt | Firewall or CDN filtering the bot | The published IP ranges that your host or CDN must let through |
| When does a change take effect? | The RFC 9309 standard says a cached robots.txt should generally not be used for more than 24 hours | According to OpenAI, around 24 hours for its search systems to adjust |
| How do you recognize success? | Results for site:your-domain.com in Bing | OAI-SearchBot requests in the server log, later mentions in ChatGPT answers with search |
Pay special attention to the fourth row. A clean robots.txt is useless if the firewall stops the bot first. Which bot serves which purpose and which decision fits is covered in Which AI crawlers should I allow?
How do you check whether you can be included?
Five steps show whether OAI-SearchBot can reach your page:
- Open robots.txt. Open
https://your-domain.com/robots.txtin your browser and look forOAI-SearchBot. If the name is not there and theUser-agent: *group does not block the path, access is open. - Explicitly allow both bots if you name individual bots. Under RFC 9309, the catch-all group only applies when no group matches the bot's name. If one matches, only that one counts. The example below this list shows the rule.
- Check your CDN and firewall. The IP ranges are listed at
https://openai.com/searchbot.json. Compare them with your bot rules at Cloudflare, Fastly or in your host's WAF. - Filter the server log, one week later at the earliest. Search the last 30 days of requests for
OAI-SearchBot. No hits despite an open file can mean a layer above is blocking or the bot has not come by yet. - Test in ChatGPT. With search on, ask the question your page answers best and look at the sources.

Why can a reachable page still be missing?
The cache is not a copy of the web. For offline web search, OpenAI says there is no refresh SLA for a specific URL. Typical reasons it gives for missing or stale content are blocks in robots.txt, bot-blocking behavior by CDNs, login requirements, heavily script-dependent content, new or rarely accessed pages, and structures that make deeper pages hard to discover.
For you, this means server-rendered HTML, a flat click structure and a maintained sitemap improve the chance that your page is in the cache. These points apply to offline web search, but they are a good hint at what OpenAI's systems depend on.
Can I neglect Bing now?
No. Since its public preview in February 2026, the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools has shown how often content is cited in Microsoft Copilot, in AI summaries in Bing and in select partner integrations. Reach counts too: according to Statcounter, Bing had a search market share of around 6.4 percent in Germany in October 2026, Google around 88.5 percent.
So keep both routes open and check them separately. At flize, the Tech Audit covers the access part, including crawler access.
Can I submit my URL to OpenAI?
+
The help pages cited here name no submission route, only the access condition: allow OAI-SearchBot and let its published IP ranges through.
I blocked GPTBot. Am I out of ChatGPT?
+
No. GPTBot controls use as training material for the models, OAI-SearchBot controls search. OpenAI treats the two settings separately.
How quickly does a new page appear in ChatGPT?
+
You cannot schedule it. For offline web search, OpenAI gives no fixed time for a single URL. What you can influence is access and discoverability through internal links and your sitemap.
Does a good Bing ranking at least improve my chances?
+
It is a good sign for crawlability and structure, but no evidence for ChatGPT. OpenAI does not disclose how much Bing data feeds into individual answers, and it does not guarantee placement.
