What is Meta Muse and what does it mean for brand visibility in AI answers?

by Johannes Zimmer··6 min read·GEO · Meta
In short

"Meta Muse" refers to two things. The first is Meta's new model family: its first model, Muse Spark, has powered the Meta AI assistant since April 8, 2026. The second is Muse, a personal AI agent that Meta introduced on September 8, 2026 and that is launching in the US only for now. For brands, what matters most is where Meta builds its answers from: the open web, collected by the meta-webindexer crawler, and public content on Instagram, Facebook and Threads. If you block meta-webindexer, you give up the chance to be cited with a link in Meta AI answers.

TL;DR
  • Muse Spark is Meta's language model since April 2026; Muse is the agent that takes actions, since September 2026.
  • Meta is rolling out the Muse agent in the US. It has not announced a date for Germany or the rest of Europe.
  • Meta AI itself has been available in the EU since March 2025, in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger.
  • To be cited from the web, meta-webindexer must be allowed to read your pages.
  • Meta plans to weave posts, Reels and creator content more deeply into its answers. That turns your presence on Meta's platforms into a source in its own right.

What exactly is Meta Muse?

Muse is the name of a model series from Meta Superintelligence Labs. According to Meta's announcement, Muse Spark is the first model in this series and was built specifically for Meta's own products. On July 9, 2026, Meta followed up with Muse Spark 1.1: a multimodal model for agentic tasks, meaning tasks where the AI operates tools itself and plans several steps ahead. It has a context window of one million tokens. Meta introduced the Muse agent on September 8, 2026. It runs on its own virtual machine with a browser and uses Muse Spark.

How do brands show up in Meta's AI answers?

Meta opens up three routes. They take effect at different speeds, and not all of them are open in Germany yet.

1. Through your website. In its crawler documentation, Meta describes meta-webindexer as the crawler that improves Meta AI's search results. Allowing it in robots.txt, in Meta's own words, helps Meta cite and link to your content in Meta AI answers. There are two other user agents. meta-externalagent crawls for training AI models and for direct indexing. meta-externalfetcher fetches individual links at a user's request. Meta explicitly lists helping the AI navigate websites when it completes a task for someone as one of its purposes. This is the user agent that can bypass robots.txt.

2. Through Meta's own platforms. According to Meta, shopping mode draws on style inspiration and brand stories that already run in its apps. Users can also mention a brand or creator with @ to search their public content. Meta has announced that Reels, photos and posts will be built directly into answers, with credit to the creators.

3. Through the agent's connectors. Connectors are fixed integrations with services and shops. According to Meta, Muse launched with dozens of partners and access to the full Shopify catalog. At Connect 2026, retailers such as Walmart, Best Buy, Sephora and Wayfair were added. If a shop has no connector, the agent can still open a browser and fill in forms. Before making a purchase, however, it asks for approval.

What does this mean for brands in Germany?

The agent is not a factor there yet, but the first two routes are. Meta AI runs in the apps your audience opens every day and, according to Meta, can also draw on information from the web. Meta has not said whether the German version already runs on Muse Spark. At launch, it only said the new features would start in the US and reach more countries "in the coming weeks".

The takeaway is straightforward. What Meta AI knows about your brand today comes from your website and your public Meta profiles. If the agent comes to Germany later, the same rules apply: for fetches where the AI navigates websites on a user's behalf, Meta already names the meta-externalfetcher user agent. Sort out access now and you won't have to catch up later.

What you should do now

  1. Check your robots.txt. If meta-webindexer is blocked there, or falls under a blanket block on AI bots, allow it:
    User-agent: meta-webindexer
    Allow: /
A bot reads only the group that matches its name. As soon as you name it explicitly, it ignores User-agent: * entirely. Our article Which AI crawlers should I allow? shows how to separate search, training and user fetches cleanly. According to Meta, changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect because the crawlers cache the file.
  2. Look at your firewall and CDN. A robots.txt that allows everything is useless if your CDN turns the bots away first. The same article explains which layers interact here.
  3. Filter your server logs. A week after the change, search for meta-webindexer and meta-externalfetcher. If the name doesn't appear at all, the problem is access, not content.
  4. Maintain your public profiles. Meta wants to build posts and Reels into its answers and make brands searchable via @. Your Instagram, Facebook and Threads profiles should therefore be public, with products, prices and locations stated in text, not just in images.
  5. Add Meta AI to your measurement. Ask Meta AI your fixed list of real questions too, and record each time whether you were mentioned, cited or absent. We explain how to build such a list and which metrics matter in How do I measure my visibility in AI answers?
  6. Close the gaps. If the AI finds no answer to the question on your site, even the most open access won't help. Our Answer Check matches every question found against your website and shows which page and section answers it, or what is missing.

If you still aren't mentioned despite open access, work through the four layers in Why am I not cited in AI answers? in order.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Meta Muse in Germany?

+

Not the Muse agent. Meta is rolling it out in the US on iOS, Android and muse.ai and has not given a date for Europe. You can, however, use Meta AI in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger.

Do I need to allow meta-externalagent to be visible?

+

meta-webindexer is responsible for citations with links. According to Meta, meta-externalagent is used to train AI models and to improve products through direct indexing. Meta doesn't say exactly which products. We recommend deciding on it separately, depending on how you feel about your content being used for training.

Will my brand's Instagram posts be cited in Meta AI?

+

Meta has announced this. Muse Spark is set to gradually enable features that cite recommendations and shared content from Instagram, Facebook and Threads. There is no fixed timeline for Germany.

Does the Muse agent read my website?

+

Meta doesn't state explicitly which user agent Muse uses. Its crawler documentation, however, assigns fetches where the AI navigates websites to complete tasks for users to meta-externalfetcher. Because each of these is triggered by a specific request, this user agent can bypass robots.txt. The only way to block it is through your firewall. Think carefully before doing so: behind every one of these fetches is a person trying to get something done with you.
